“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back… If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’” -Mark 13:35-37
A Prayer:
Lord God, our Father in heaven,
In this season of Advent, awaken our hearts to the glorious hope of the return of your Son Jesus Christ to the earth. We confess that there are many things around us that work to distract and lull us into spiritual apathy and indifference. Father, come and enable us to hear your voice and may we be awakened to the stirring of your Holy Spirit to watch and wait for that unknown day and hour.
You have called us to be ever watchful and alert and so we pray as your Son taught us to pray: “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.”
Gracious God, may we be filled once again with the spirit of revelation concerning the indescribable majesty of your Son who is the exact radiance of your glory. May we be awakened again and filled with awe and wonder at the nature and character of Jesus, who came in human form to show us exactly what you, O Lord are truly like.
We pray for that unique grace to watch and to wait, to live with hearts softened by faith, and lives of obedient trust. We offer this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever, Amen.
Please note: the Encountering Hope series will skip Sundays, so you can be ‘watching and waiting’ for Day 4 on Monday :)
